Serious Fun:
Young Playwright Workshop
July 25-29

A one-week playwrighting workshop to learn valuable techniques and explore playwrighting. Our Discovering Your Voice workshop will be held Monday through Friday, July 25-29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The GhostLight Theatre.

Many current writers get their start studying how Shakespeare did it. This same method can work for you. Shakespeare had themes about which he was passionate. Themes of politics. Of love.  Of power. And he knew better than anyone how to bring these themes to the stage. In this workshop, you will bring your own themes to life just as Shakespeare did. Think about people in the movies who brought about their own downfall – The Lion King based on Hamlet, West Side Story based on Romeo and Juliet and Mean Girls based on Julius Caesar.

Through simple acting exercises, theatre games, and by emulating the structural and literary elements that define Shakespeare, you will write an original tragedy comparable to those of the Bard.  This workshop culminates with a readers-theatre performance of your original piece.

The workshop begins with a telling of Macbeth which is the anchoring model. Participants also perform excepts from this play such as Lady Macbeth’s dagger soliloquy. From this experience, you begin discussing key elements and writing your own scripts.

If you have ever appreciated a well-written play, this may be the time to create one of your own and have fun doing it!

ENROLLMENT: Open to 10 students entering 7th through 11th grade.

DATES: Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29 - 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
